It’s not an easy situation to imagine, and one we never want to find ourselves or our loved ones in. However, should the Home Intruder Scenario become a reality, outcomes vastly differ depending on one’s level of preparedness. Everyone’s circumstances are different, but here are some easy guidelines to consider when creating a plan that is right for you and your family. This plan is modular and can be ramped up or dialed down depending on your unique circumstances.
Heres a little overview:
Remember, the best home intrusion is the one that never happens. You don’t have to out swim the shark; you just have to not be the slowest swimmer. This means that intruders often look for the easiest target, so just don't be that target. Here are some of my pointers in making sure you're not that target.
Ensuring the safety of your home starts with proactive measures. Well-lit surroundings can discourage potential intruders, and motion-triggered lights (like these: https://bit.ly/3rBsgPS) offer an excellent option. Place these lights strategically at entry and exit points. Additionally, trimming shrubbery near windows and doors reduces potential hiding spots for intruders. Strengthen your home's security with deadbolts and reinforced strike plates, or consider applying a laminate film over glass to deter break-ins. Installing cameras over entry and exit points can serve as a visual deterrent, even if they don't actually record anything. Also, displaying the US Flag may also act as a potential deterrent, as it suggests the presence of a gun owner. (Check it Out)
Being prepared for a home intrusion means having a well-thought-out emergency plan in place. Establish designated "safe areas" within and around the house, providing your family with multiple response options based on the situation. Be ready to choose between barricading yourself or maneuvering safely through the house. While on the go, always be mindful of concealment and cover options. We will cover those in depth, but for this just know concealment hides you but doesn’t stop bullets while cover does both. Rehearsing these plans with your family will ensure that everyone knows their role and feels more confident in handling emergencies.
Effective communication can be a crucial aspect of surviving a home intrusion. Keep a charged cell phone with you at all times and verify that it receives a strong signal in your area. In case you need help and cannot speak, you need to have a plan to mark your location for responding law enforcement. Items like chem lights (our favorites), strobe lights, a bright-colored shirt or cardboard, and a whistle can help attract attention and aid during day and night situations.
In extreme circumstances where barricading and maneuvering are not viable options, being prepared to defend yourself and your family becomes essential. Firearms can be a viable choice, but they require proper training and periodic practice. Seek instruction from qualified professionals in self-defense preparation. (There’s also an awesome new app called BRASS, check it out here.) It's important to be mentally prepared to take decisive action if the situation demands it. Other defensive tools like less than lethals, such as Tasers, pepper spray, knives, and bats can also provide a means to fight back. Unconventional items, such as a fire extinguisher or a pot of hot coffee, can serve as surprising defensive tools. Admit it, we’ve all thought about Home Alone.
Remember, these guidelines are intended to help you consider and develop a plan that best suits your unique situation. Regular practice and review will ensure that you and your family are better prepared to handle any potential home intrusion.
Always prioritize your safety and, when needed, seek advice from professionals in the field.

]]>Let's start by clarify dry fire training and understand how it sets itself apart from live fire practice. Dry fire training involves simulating the shooting experience without using live ammunition, allowing shooters to focus solely on the fundamental aspects of marksmanship. Basically stripping away the distractions of recoil and noise to zero in on the core elements that make you a better shooter. It's all about refining your technique, improving accuracy, and developing muscle memory—all in a controlled and safe environment. Making it perfect for new shooters, but we’ll get into that a little later.
When engaging in dry fire training, as with any handling of a firearm, safety is number one. Always ensure that your firearm is unloaded, and double-check this both visually and physically. Clear the training area of any live ammunition and maintain a safe direction throughout the exercises. By prioritizing safety, you create an environment that maximizes the effectiveness of your dry fire training. Brass tacks, is you want to finish training with as many holes you started with.
To make the most of your dry fire training sessions, certain tools are indispensable. First and foremost, you need a cleared and firearm for your dry fire practice. I like to use my carry guns. At the core, it makes me more comfortable with every aspect. Treat this firearm with the same respect and safety precautions as a loaded one, ensuring it is never loaded with live ammunition while your are training.
The first tool I would recommend is our BRASS BEAM. It’s a cartridge-shaped device that fits into the chamber of your firearm and emits a laser beam when the firing pin strikes it. The laser beam acts as a virtual bullet, allowing you to practice aiming and trigger control skills. One, downside is if you want to practice multiple shots, you have to reset your firing pin. Unless you invest in a DRY FIRE MAG. The guys over there have developed a platform that works with a laser cartridge that allows your trigger to rest every pull, so no need to re rack your gun.
Also, consider incorporating other tools such as laser training devices or software-based training programs, such as our application (BRASS APP) that offer visual feedback and analysis of your shooting technique, further enhancing the effectiveness of your dry fire training.
Snap caps, those dummy rounds that simulate the weight and function of live ammunition, are another valuable tool for dry fire training. With snap caps, you can safely practice manipulating your firearm's mechanisms, including loading and unloading, without any risk of accidental discharge.
If you can/want to, a dedicated SIRT or Laser Shot SIM (Dry Fire) Firearm opens a whole world of training options. These are inert/ laser guns that simulate true-to-life trigger weight, take-up, and reset. That allows users to practice literally any drill they can do live fire and limit the variables when making the switch back over to live fire.
Lastly, creating a safe training area is crucial. Whether it's in your home or a designated shooting range, ensure you have a suitable backstop that minimizes the risk of unintended collateral damage.
Let's delve into the incredible benefits of dry fire training when it comes to improving your shooting mechanics and technique. Without the distractions of recoil and the noise of live fire, you can focus solely on the fundamentals. This means dedicating your attention to perfecting your grip, stance, and trigger control—the cornerstones of becoming a better shooter.
Consistent dry fire practice pays off dividends when it comes to achieving smoother and more precise shooting mechanics. Repetition is the name of the game, my friends. By repeating those dry fire drills diligently, you're ingraining those movements into your muscle memory. This translates to more natural and instinctive actions during live fire, making your shots faster and more accurate.
Muscle memory and reflexes are the secret ingredients to becoming a true shooter, and dry fire training is the key to developing them. Through repetitive dry fire drills, you train your muscles and build neural pathways (SCIENCE) that allows for seamless shooting actions. These actions become second nature, enabling you to perform with precision and efficiency during live fire situations.
Let's talk about some of the specific dry fire drills that target different aspects of shooting skills. One example is the draw and presentation drill, where you practice drawing your firearm from the holster and presenting it accurately and swiftly. Other drills focus on sight alignment, helping you acquire and maintain a proper sight picture, or trigger control, where you master the art of squeezing the trigger smoothly and consistently. These drills are like hidden gems that, when practiced regularly, can elevate your shooting skills to new heights. If you are past that though, work on getting off the “X”, reloads, and malfunctions. There is always something that you can do without wasting money on ammo.
When it comes to dry fire training, safety should always be your top priority. Let's get into the safety considerations you should keep in mind during your dry fire exercises.
First and foremost, verify that your firearm is unloaded —this is non-negotiable. Visually inspect and physically check the chamber and magazine to ensure they are empty. We have a gentleman in the office that even likes to have others check the chamber and magazine before doing any dry fire! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS treat every firearm as if it were loaded. Your (and your loved ones) safety begins with you, and this simple step can prevent any potential accidents or mishaps.
Next, let's talk about your backstop. Having a safe backstop is crucial during dry fire training. Choose a solid and secure surface that could effectively stop any unintentional discharges or stray projectiles. Be aware of your surroundings and select a suitable backstop that minimizes the risk of unintended damage or injuries. Safety should always be your guiding principle.
Lastly, maintaining trigger discipline is of utmost importance during dry fire exercises. Don’t be the loser who is flagging everyone, especially with a finger on the trigger. Train yourself to keep your finger OFF the trigger until you are ready to shoot, even during dry fire practice. This simple act of discipline prevents accidental discharges and ensures that your training remains safe and controlled.
Remember, people, safety should never be taken lightly. Follow these safety protocols, verify that your firearm is unloaded, maintain a safe backstop, and practice proper trigger discipline. By prioritizing safety in your training, you can enjoy a rewarding and accident-free experience. Now, let's move on to the next section and explore how you can incorporate dry fire training into your practice routine.
Alright, let's talk about seamlessly integrating dry fire training into your regular shooting practice. With a few practical tips and a structured training plan, you can maximize the effectiveness of your dry fire sessions and take your skills to the next level. Let's dive in!
First and foremost, create a structured training plan. Treat your dry fire training like any other workout regimen. Set aside dedicated time for your sessions, whether it's daily or a few times a week, and commit to it. Consistency is the key, my friends! By establishing a routine, you make dry fire training a regular part of your shooting practice.
Set specific goals for each dry fire session. Whether it's improving your draw speed, refining your trigger control, or enhancing your sight alignment, having clear objectives helps you stay focused and motivated. Write down your goals and track your progress to see the improvements unfold over time.
Incorporate variety into your dry fire drills. Keep things fresh and challenging by rotating through different exercises that target different aspects of shooting skills. Practice shooting on the move, shooting from different positions, or engaging multiple targets. By diversifying your drills, you enhance your overall shooting abilities and adaptability.
Consider using training aids or targets specifically designed for dry fire practice. These tools can provide instant feedback, allowing you to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments. Laser training devices or computer-based training programs are great options that offer visual feedback and analysis of your shooting technique.
Lastly, don't neglect live fire practice. While dry fire training is a powerful tool, it is essential to complement it with live fire practice. The skills and muscle memory developed through dry fire training need to be validated and reinforced with real-world shooting scenarios. Find a balance between dry fire and live fire sessions to achieve well-rounded shooting proficiency.
By incorporating dry fire training into your practice routine, setting specific goals, diversifying your drills, and utilizing training aids, you can maximize the effectiveness of your training and take your shooting skills to new heights. So, set aside dedicated time, stay motivated, and let dry fire training become an integral part of your journey towards shooting mastery.
Lets up our dry fire training and explore some techniques that can take your shooting skills up a notch. These items introduce additional challenges and help you refine your abilities in various shooting scenarios.
One technique is incorporating movement into your dry fire drills, or getting off the “X”. Practice shooting on the move, simulating real-world scenarios where you may need to engage targets while advancing or retreating. By adding movement, you enhance your ability to maintain accuracy and control while in motion. Also, you likely are not going to want to just stand there in a defense scenario. Just saying.
Another technique to consider is shooting from different positions. Practice shooting from kneeling, prone, or behind cover, as these positions may be encountered in real-life situations. By familiarizing yourself with shooting from different positions during dry fire training, you build confidence and adaptability for when it truly counts. You don’t want your first time shooting upside down, with your weak side, to be in real life. Who knows, ammirite?
Lastly, consider engaging multiple targets during your drills. Set up multiple targets in various configurations and practice transitioning between them efficiently. This trains your eyes and muscles to quickly acquire new targets, leading to faster and more accurate engagements. Remember, the eyes lead the gun! Find the target, bring sights up, engage, and repeat.
To enhance your dry fire training, explore resources such as online videos, books, and training programs dedicated to advanced dry fire techniques. These resources provide guidance, tips, and drills that can take your skills to the next level.
By incorporating these advanced dry fire techniques and utilizing available resources, you can continuously challenge yourself, refine your shooting abilities, and become a well-rounded shooter capable of handling a variety of real-life shooting scenarios.
Congrats on taking the first step into the world of dry fire training. By understanding the basics, emphasizing safety, harnessing the benefits, incorporating it into your practice routine (CONSISTENTLY), and trying advanced techniques, you're on your way to becoming a Tier 1 Level shooter. Keep practicing, stay disciplined, and never stop looking for improvement. Remember, shooting is a perishable skill.
Go and get better. PEACE! - Jeff
]]>First things first, what exactly is the OODA loop? Well, it stands for ‘Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act’. It's a decision-making cycle that was first developed by military strategist and United States Air Force Colonel John Boyd. The idea behind the OODA loop is that in any given situation, whether it's a military engagement, a high-pressure sports game, or even just a conversation with your boss, you're constantly cycling through these four stages to make decisions and take action.
Now, let's talk about the physiological response that happens during the OODA loop. When you're in a high-pressure situation, like a firefight or a tense business negotiation, your body goes through a series of physical changes. These changes are designed to help you survive and make decisions quickly. It is often referred to as the "fight or flight" response.
During the "Observe" phase, your body starts to release adrenaline and other stress hormones. Your heart rate increases, your breathing becomes rapid and shallow, and your muscles tense up. This is your body's way of preparing you for action.
As you move into the "Orient" phase, your brain starts to process all of the information you've gathered from your surroundings. Your pupils dilate to help you see better, and your senses become heightened. This is the moment when you start to analyze the situation and form a plan.
In the "Decide" phase, your brain weighs the pros and cons of each possible action and selects the best one. This is when you decide whether to fight, flee, or negotiate. Your body is still in high gear, ready to execute your decision.
Finally, in the "Act" phase, you take action based on the decision you made in the previous stage. Your body releases even more adrenaline and other hormones, giving you a burst of energy and focus. Your senses become razor-sharp, and your reflexes are lightning-fast.
(When writing about this, I couldn’t stop thinking about that scene from Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Junior. You’re welcome. Link: https://youtu.be/ltFyEcoGnbQ)
So, why is it important to understand the OODA loop and its physiological response? Well, for starters, it can help you perform better in high-pressure situations. By understanding how your body and brain are reacting, you can learn to control your responses and make better decisions. It can also help you understand the behavior of others. By observing someone's physical responses during the OODA loop, you can gain insight into their decision-making process and possibly predict their next move.
In an active shooter situation, the difference between life and death is a matter of milliseconds. If you’re looking for an advantage, you need to train your OODA loop.. At the same time, you should be able to analyze the shooter’s OODA loop and break it. All of this boils down to consistent training with stress inoculation.
Obviously, since you are reading this on Triumph System’s website, it’s pretty obvious that we designed our products to help in training your OODA loop. The Pivotal Trainer is the only affordable mobile turning target system that you can customize and always keep your OODA loop on the edge. We also offer other different kinds of targets such as reactive targets, bursting targets, steel targets, etc. to use along with our Pivotal trainers to simulate real life situations.
Following are some of the shooting drills that Jared and I have done to help enhance our training. For more such drills and awesome shooting targets, reach out to us, we’re always happy to talk about training..

In conclusion, the OODA loop, and its physiological response are fascinating topics that can help you improve your performance in high-pressure situations. Whether you're in the military, sports, or business world, understanding the OODA loop can give you an edge over the competition. So, the next time you're in a tense situation, remember to Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act. Oh, and don't forget to take a deep breath!
Well, it's time to holster the keyboard and get back to the real world. Until next time, keep practicing and never stop learning!
Train hard and stay safe. Jeff out.
]]>What's up, my fellow gun people?! I'm stoked to dive into the exciting world of ballistics and show you how it affects shooting. Now, I know some of you might be intimidated by the technical jargon (and the math), but don't worry, we'll keep things simple and entertaining. So, let's get started.
Heck, you might even be asking, “What are ballistics?” I promise this is not going to be a physics class. Ballistics is way more interesting than that. It is all about what happens when you shoot a gun. You know those action movies where the hero takes out the bad guy from a mile away with a single shot? That's ballistics in action. It's like magic, but with bullets instead of rabbits. Okay, maybe that's not the best comparison, but you get the idea.
Basically, ballistics is the study of what happens to a bullet when you fire it. It's like physics, but with way more explosions. When you pull the trigger, a whole bunch of things happens inside your gun that affect how the bullet travels through the air. Understanding these things can help you become a better shooter and make more accurate shots.
So, if you're into shooting, or just curious about how it all works, then you definitely need to know about ballistics. Plus, it's a great conversation starter at parties. Just don't be that guy who talks about nothing but guns all night.
Nobody likes that guy.
There are three types of ballistics that come into play whenever a trigger is pulled. They are,
The first thing you need to understand about ballistics is that it's all about what happens when you pull the trigger. And that's where internal ballistics comes in. This field of study focuses on what's happening inside your firearm when you fire it. Essentially, a small explosion happens inside the gun, which ignites the powder and propels the bullet out of the barrel. Understanding internal ballistics is crucial for optimizing your firearm's performance. For example, the type of powder you use can affect the amount of recoil your gun has, which can influence your accuracy.
Now, let's talk about external ballistics. This is where things get really interesting. Once the bullet leaves the barrel, it enters a world of unpredictable factors like wind, gravity, and atmospheric conditions. These variables can significantly impact the trajectory of your shot and cause you to miss even if you aimed perfectly. But don't panic, with a little knowledge of external ballistics and practice with the right Shooting Training Targets, you can make the necessary adjustments and hit your target like a pro. For example, shooting on a windy day means that you might need to aim a little to the left or right to compensate for the wind. Knowing how to calculate bullet drop and how far a bullet will travel can also help you choose the right round for your situation.
Then comes terminal ballistics into play. This field of study focuses on what happens when your bullet hits its target. Different types of ammo and bullets can have a significant impact on how much damage they do, and understanding this can be a real game-changer when it comes to hunting or self-defense situations. For instance, hollow-point bullets are designed to expand upon impact, causing more damage to the target, while full-metal jacket bullets are designed to penetrate deeply, making them useful in certain scenarios. Knowing the round, weight and metals comp to use for each situation can be the difference between success and failure.
So, why should you care about ballistics? Well, for starters, understanding ballistics can make you a better shooter. By knowing how your gun and ammo work together, you can make more accurate shots and impress your shooting buddies. It can also help you choose the right equipment for your shooting situation. For example, if you're hunting, you might choose a different type of ammo than if you're shooting at the range. The bottom line is that understanding ballistics can take your shooting skills to the next level and help you make informed decisions when it comes to firearms.
Understanding the science behind ballistics is one thing, but being able to apply it in practice is an entirely different matter. While it's important to have a theoretical understanding of ballistics and its impact on shooting, it's equally essential to undergo training under various conditions to fully comprehend how ballistics works in real-world situations.
At Triumph Systems, we offer a wide range of targets including Reactive Targets for shooting, Steel targets for shooting, Bleeding targets, and more, that can help you train for ballistics and receive instant feedback on your performance.
To effectively train for ballistics, there are several key aspects you should focus on to hone your reflexes and develop the necessary skills to account for the many variables that affect the ballistics. First and foremost, it's crucial to train both indoors and outdoors to experience the full impact of ballistics on your shooting. In long-range shooting, for example, you must take into account the effects of wind and distance and train accordingly.
Another important factor to consider is how ballistics can differ based on the terrain. Bullets behave differently on uphill and downhill slopes due to the effect of ballistics, and it's essential to train in these conditions to learn how to compensate and shoot accurately.
Additionally, it's important to understand how different guns and ammunition can impact ballistics, as this can play a crucial role in real-life scenarios. By training your reflexes to account for these effects, you can be better prepared to make accurate shots in high-pressure situations.
Failing to take ballistics into account can have severe consequences, and a misplaced shot can put everything at stake. That's why it's essential to undergo thorough training for ballistics and equip yourself with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in any shooting situation.
In conclusion, ballistics is a fascinating field that every shooter should have a basic understanding of. By mastering the basics of internal ballistics, external ballistics, and terminal ballistics, you can optimize your firearm's performance, make more accurate shots, and stay safe while handling firearms. And always remember to put safety first when handling firearms. If you're ever feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to reach out to a professional or experienced shooter for some advice.
And with that, we've reached the end of another blog post. I'll leave you with a nugget of wisdom from my favorite philosopher, Ron Swanson: 'Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.' This is Jeffrey King, the "Triumph Marketing Dude", signing off.
P.S. If you read this whole blog to find out what Beyonce and Ballistics have in common....it's nothing. Thanks again for reading!!
]]>As someone who's been involved in both fitness and firearms for a long time (over 10+ years now), I can't stress enough how important it is to be both physically fit and train harder in the range in order to be an expert in handling firearms. While it's easy to believe that just owning a firearm will keep you safe, it's simply not true. I can’t tell you how many people I come across on a regular basis that are proud to own a gun, but openly admit to never training. Without proper physical fitness and firearms training, you may not be able to react quickly and effectively in an emergency situation.
In any fight or flight situation, your mind and body must work together for a better chance of survival. In any given real-life situation, the chances of you being in an open space and firing back is fantastical. Survival is the ultimate aim of self-defense and physical training is part of any and every tactical shooting training. You constantly moving, taking cover, and using concealment effectively. And that is the only way to increase your chances of survival. You simply cannot move all of a sudden if you have been lagging in your physical training for years.
Physical fitness is a major component of firearms training and self-defense. By definition, physical fitness means being able to perform everyday activities without experiencing fatigue or exhaustion. (Besides walking upstairs. I don’t care how physically fit you are, walking up two or more flights of stairs will always make you out of breath.) ANYWAY, This is essential for handling firearms, as you need to have a steady hand, good aim, and quick reaction times. Regular exercise can improve all of these physical attributes, making you more effective and confident when using a firearm.
If you are following a proper physical fitness regimen along with your shooting range training, you’ll be sharp. Period. Physical strength along with firearms proficiency will help you make swift decisions and react responsibly. It will help you stand firm when appropriate, retreat when possible and required, and ultimately help you manage the physiological responses associated with fear.
Firearms proficiency is as important as your physical health, for it is much more than just self-defense. Whether you're an avid hunter or just enjoy shooting as a hobby, knowing how to handle different types of firearms and practicing proper shooting techniques can improve your accuracy and control. This translates into a more enjoyable experience and a greater sense of confidence when using firearms. Especially in a self-defense scenario. You don’t want your first time drawing from your holster and putting a round downrange, under stress, to be when it’s life or death. FORTUNATELY, the cool guys at Triumph Systems have made the Pivotal Trainer turning target system to help train for just that. (Shameless product plug.)
But how does physical fitness and firearms proficiency relate to each other, you might ask? Actually, the connection is significant. Being physically fit can help you improve your accuracy and reaction time while handling firearms, while firearms training can also contribute to overall physical fitness. For example, practicing shooting drills can provide a cardiovascular workout, while carrying a firearm can also serve as a form of resistance training.
If you're interested in combining fitness and firearms training, it's important to seek guidance from a professional and follow safety guidelines. Your training regimen should include a balanced mix of cardio, strength training, and firearms training exercises. It's also essential to choose the right types of exercises that can help improve your shooting skills, such as yoga for stability and breathing techniques for improved focus. If you feel like you’re in a really good place, check out The Tactical Games. They are the ultimate test if you think you are good with a gun and athletic. Doing one of their events will IMMEDIATELY expose your weak spots. Plus, they’re super fun.
At Triumph Systems, our mission is to design and build world-class training systems that reinvent cognitive and discretionary training. Our range of products includes Reactive targets, Steel Shooting targets, Hunting targets for shooting, etc. designed and manufactured in the USA.
Below are some of the Tactical Shooting Drills that we performed with our range of Pivotal Trainer Turning Target Systems. Need some help or guidance from expert firearm trainers? Reach out to us today!
In conclusion, physical fitness and firearms proficiency are both essential for self-defense and overall health and well-being. By incorporating both into your life, you can improve your strength, accuracy, and reaction time, while also reducing stress and anxiety. Plus, you’ll be happier than you have ever been in your life. (I can’t promise that, but it might happen.) So, whether you're already an experienced shooter or just getting started, take the time to focus on your physical fitness and firearms training. You'll be glad you did when it really counts. As the great Garand Thumb says, “If you’re not fit, you’re gunna die.”
Stay safe and train hard. - Jeff

Being fellow gun guys/gals, shooting target aficionados, and training sticklers, we want to people to be informed and make the most of their time on the range. All our, specially designed, products are made just for people like you. However, choosing the right blend of Shooting range targets is very important. I’m sure you did your research on YouTube and Google, but that is simply not enough. It is not rocket science, but you definitely need someone (or a team) with prior experience in this avenue to help you. That’s exactly what we intend to do from this article. We want to help you understand the basics and choose your shooting targets wisely. Maximizing training, fun, and of course use of ammo.
So, what’s important to start your shooting training journey? Honestly, it depends on a lot of factors. The journey is different for each person. For some it’s for fun and relaxation, for some it is rigorous training and skill development. But, the intent is important. Well, intent and which platforms you are using…
While we could spend HOURS on this, brass tacks is that there are a few different types of guns available for beginners to become familar with. Although it looks cool, we don’t recommend you start your training with the ones Arnold used in Terminator. Start with the ones that are pertinent to what you are training for, and then treat yourself to more advanced platforms as your skill improves. Following are the basic types of firearms and some suggestions on how to begin your training.
Handguns are incredibly popular amogst first time gunowners. The ease of use, size, and comfortablilty to handle lends to their use worldwide. Don’t take them lightly because of their size, developing the groundwork for handguns can take alot of practice. These are the best and go-to kind of firearm for everyday carrying. They can be quick, lightweight, and can be the difference maker in a number of situations.
Additionally, they are the most practical way to start your training as a first time gun buyer, due to ease of acquiring ammo, size, and price point. Most handguns are around 6 to 7 inches long and weigh around 18 to 22oz. They are easy to conceal/deploy and are apt for short range encounters. Handguns like the Glock 19 (my personal favorite), 1911 style firearms (two world wars), Springfield XD, and Smith & Wesson M&P have alot of aspects that are great for new shooters.
Rifles are a classic and popular among gun lovers. There are different kinds of rifles and it can be super exciting (and intimidating) your first time using one. As a beginner, contrary to what most people believe, we suggest trying AR style platforms. They are best suited for beginners. In the present gun market, they are available in different varieties, price points, and features. The best part is you can customize them to fit any of your needs.
Suggestion From Jeffrey King: You can check out BRO-SPEC15 from Black Rain Ordnance. It's one of my personal favorites. I’ve taken it with me to the range for training and demo days time in and out. The weight, trigger, and design are bar none. The best part is it’s perfect for beginners all the way to experts.
Scatter guns, boom sticks, or shotguns? Different names, same great platform. This very popular firearm is a favorite amongst hunters, home defense, and recreational sport shooting. While choosing a shotgun, check its weight, recoil, capacity, price, and action type. You can choose Remington 870 express, Mossberg Model 500, and Benelli Nova to kick off your introduction into shotguns.
Training can be fun with the right safety gear. But, you know whats not fun? Racking your firearm, looking around to make sure everyone knows the range is hot, and sending a round downrange followed by a very lound ringing sensation because you forgot your ear pro was around your leg. Often overlooked by beginners, because they are not thinking about the safety gear surrounding shooting, but this is an aspect of the gun world that is extremly important. Following are some shooting range gear you must have before you start your training.
Eye protection- It is mandatory. Don’t compromise. Period. Get Shooting range protective eyewear of the best quality. Check the products for their quality and certifications to ensure that they are safe and durable. You get what you pay for. Protect your eyes.
Ear protection- These help in protecting your eardrums from the high dBs generated while shooting. It is necessary to have high-quality ear protection in the shooting range to protect your hearing. My recommendation is get an electronic noise canceling pair, that you can leave on while not shooting at the range. That way you are not yelling the entire day and can hear the people around you.
Range Bag - Get the best range bags for your need. Make sure that your range bag has good room for your firearms, ammo, ear and eye pro, cleaning kits, etc. When it comes to firearm training in the range, a shooting range bag is absolutely essential.
Feeling comfortable with your firearm, You need to practice, practice, and practice. But, before that, you need to choose the right targets for your guns and calibers. Selecting the top shooting range target for beginners involves multiple factors. Some of the factors are discussed below,
There are four basic materials when it comes to shooting targets:
Each material is suitable for a particular task. As a beginner, you should select the right material for your Shooting training targets based on what you are wanting to do!
Paper targets for Shooting are popular and versatile options. Here are the pros and cons
Clay targets are best suitable for sport practivce, like trap and skeet. These brittle targets are a fun element in the shooting range and break up into a cloud of dust. It is best suited for single-time use. But, they can also bee a fun addition to a rifle or handgun range day.
Polymer targets have minimal damage and a higher lifespan. In most of the shooting ranges, they are used as ground targets. These target are a little more fun and unpredictable, as they tend to bounce when they’re shot.
Steel targets are the stars of this present Era. They have major popularity among shooters. In comparison with other materials, this is highly durable and has a greater lifetime. ]]>So, do you want to build shooting range at home? Get ready for a huge, but awesome, undertaking! This endeavor will allow you to customize every aspect and let you create the exact space you are looking for. Now, the question is, what do you want to change or add? Do you want to focus on training or having fun? What kind of shooter are you (long-range, three-gun, tactical training, etc)? Are you looking for some shooting range target systems to train? The guide we’ve compiled below is just some of the many options available and hope it helps you design your dream range. Also, keep in mind, that this process can be as expensive or inexpensive as you make it, so keep your options and mind open.
Also, if you are looking for some awesome shooting target systems for your shooting range, don’t forget to check out our Pivotal Trainers.
Despite what you want to do, it is important to ensure the legality of building your own shooting range in your region. Make sure that you’ve consulted with your lawyers/experts regarding all the local, state, and federal legislation and rules before building your range. If it is legal, consult and understand the standards that you have to follow in order to build a range. Once you have a working knowledge of the regulations, ensure that your range is built in compliance with the law.
In terms of the fun and freedom, you will have at your own shooting range and it is definitely worth building it. But, that is not the only factor that needs to be considered. The most obvious benefit of having a shooting range is that you would save money and you can try other non-conventional training that pushes your limits while improving your skills.
But, are you a seasoned shooter who practices often? If so, how much do you time do you spend every month on the range? If you are not a experienced shooter, how often do you train? If the cost you spend on building your range doesn’t offset the cost spent every month on the range in the long term, then it might not be a great idea to build your own range. At the end of the day, it is your decision to make!
In short, we would recommend you build an outdoor range. Outdoor ranges are easy to build and open-ended. With an outdoor range, you can do whatever you want. Your imagination and the weight of your wallet are the limits. It can be as simple as a single berm with some targets to setting up ranges that offer situation-based training.
But, if you have the budget and the inspiration to build your own indoor range you can do so as well. Building your own indoor range involves complying with a lot of standards for it to remain safe and legal. Simply put, your indoor range cannot be some basement converted into a range. It should be designed and planned properly for the right protection and ventilation.
First things first, where are you putting your range? I’ve been on some ranges that seemed a little too close to buildings and other structures. So, just be aware of this and keep these items in mind before choosing your location:
Size: How many shooters are you going to have? How much non-shooting space do you need?
Usage: What kind of training are you going to do? Is it long-range or tactical or target shooting?
Berm: We’ll cover this in the next section, but be cautious. The berm takes up more space than you think.
External Structures: What type of structures do you want on the range? Keep in mind, that the more you want, the larger the space you will need.
All the above factors play a major role in choosing the location for building your own Shooting Range. Or in other words, the usability of the range is determined by the above factors.
When building or upgrading your range you need something to stop the bullets. This goes without saying. Berms are structures that are used to stop the bullets that you downrange from leaving your AO.
When designing/installing a new berm ask yourself what type of shooting you’ll be doing. Do you need to be able to shoot in one direction, or multiple? Also, how many shooters/bays do you need? Depending on your answer, a large pile of dirt could do the trick, or you may need to put up a large structural bullet trap. Most berms we’ve trained on have surrounded the area on three sides by earth and they do great.
This allows you to do some pretty dynamic things and keep your options open when having a range day!
This is something that is ignored often when putting in/upgrading a range, what will the ground be? Honestly, it comes down to maintenance, cost, and most importantly, what you want. Some examples and our personal favorites are:
Dirt - Ah, the ole’ classic, Dirt. This allows for some awesome range days while allowing the owner to provide almost zero maintenance.
Grass - Another tried and true footing that a lot, and we mean a lot, of ranges, use. This allows for a soft and easy-to-navigate range. When well kept, a nice grass range is hard to beat.
Gravel - Gravel is often used on commercial ranges due to its durability and the low maintenance that goes into it. It’s also an excellent choice to use on your personal range too.
Grass/Concrete - This duo is commonly utilized in private training areas. The concrete will be laid almost like sidewalks at common shooting distances (5 yds, 10 yards, 25 yards, etc.) to allow for a nice stable base when shooting and in between would be rectangles of grass, allowing for dynamic movements. Plus, it looks super high-speed.
Turf - Lastly, my personal favorite, is turf. What's not to love about this stuff? It's low maintenance, easy on the body, collecting brass is super simple, and it looks cool. The one downside is the cost. We’ve talked to some range owners and they were able to acquire turf from old sports stadiums that were being renovated, so if you want turf on your range, check with them! They may even have old rolls laying around.
Now you need to decide what structures you will be putting on the range. Here are a few suggestions:
Covered Shooting Positions: These, in our opinion, are a must-have. Ranging from a rainy day to a Saturday in the range of 100-degree weather, shade is always your friend. The size is up to you, but we definitely suggest getting some shade close to where you will be.
Target Stands: You’re going to need something to shoot at. We suggest installing some standard large-sized target stands by your back berm, this will always ensure you have something to put your targets on and will allow for ease of use with any target. Try buying our pivotal trainers that come with moving targets for the shooting range and nylon frames that are easy to build and use.
Overhead Baffles: Overhead baffles are sometimes a requirement when people build their range. It allows individuals to have peace of mind that no rounds are going up and over that berm. While they aren’t for every application, you might find them useful.
Range Shed: “Ah, I wish I could just leave all the stuff I use on the range, at the shooting range without worrying about it.” Get a “Range House”, a simple small shed, and stuff all your target stands, steel, barrels, barriers, and other equipment in there, lock it up and drag it out when you need it. This will keep the range nice and clean and you won't have to move stuff around every time you are on the range.
Shoot House: This one deserves to be a blog all by itself, and maybe it will be. But, if you plan on doing some crazy dynamic training on your range, try using our Adaptive shoot house brackets along with shooting range target systems for an awesome modular shoot house.
This is kind of our specialty. From tactical training to having range time with your family, or sighting your rifle, we have just the right Targets for Shooting. Check the list below to see what targets you need to stock up on:
Tactical Training: Moving target systems are a must. The Pivotal Trainer is our go-to solution for upgrading your flat range into a dynamic discretionary training area. Our patented system allows for virtually any training scenario, building good habits and increasing stress while firearm training.
Spatter Targets: One of the most used targets, our Shot Seekers, provides an industry-leading visible ring around each shot. Each target also has an adhesive backing allowing it to be used anywhere.
Reactive Targets: Our Threat Down reactive targets are great for shooters of all ages. One could argue that paper targets are boring, but having something react to your shot is super not boring.
Bursting Targets: Skip the Tannerite, you just built an awesome range, no need to blow it up. Check out our Pop Packs Shooting Targets instead. They’re fun, colorful, and burst with violence.
We know this is a brief guide, that's meant to start your thought process and generate ideas when you think you're ready to put in a shooting range. At the end of the day and before you do any work, double-check that you are following all local, state, and federal protocols and safety precautions. Also, if we missed anything that you think is a MUST-HAVE on a range, let us know in the comments.

Here’s a handy checklist, suitable for periodic review and reinforcement to recharge your warrior mindset.
These eight critical components of tactical performance were itemized by Dallas SWAT veteran Steve Claggett at the 25th annual conference of the Illinois Tactical Officers Association and in an interview with PoliceOne.
Are these consistently your personal priorities when you’re on the street?
“Continually ask yourself: ‘What people, things, or uncleared spaces are around me or above my eye level that could hurt – or help – me?’ ” Claggett advises.
“As you approach a scene, pause and assess your 540-degree battlefield. Process individuals you encounter – their whole body, their hands, their pockets and waistband and their demeanor. What do you know about them…and what do you know about yourself in that environment? Don’t get hyper-focused on just one subject. Stay aware of potential secondary threats and threat locations.”
“Sometimes a single step to the right or left can give you a better tactical edge,” Claggett says.
“Keep your battlefield in front of you. If you can get your back against a wall or something solid, you protect your six and cut your area of concern in half. If you create distance between you and your partner, you split the suspect’s focus – minimize your battlefield, maximize his.
“Does your position facilitate your ability to act and react, or restrict it? Is your nearest cover real, or imaginary? Do you keep the suspect between you and a potential secondary threat? Do you tend to simple but important details, like keeping your flashlight out of your gun hand? Do you recognize and adjust as new vulnerabilities arise?”
“When a suspect physically attacks you, defending yourself may need to be much more than just blocking his moves,” Claggett declares.
“If he’s going for your gun, for example, your life is on the line. Turn the attack on him with all the ferocity you can muster. Drive your thumb into his eye socket, punch him in the throat, bite him – you need to overwhelm him so he no longer wants to fight and can’t fight.
“Life-or-death physical combat on the street is likely to turn more on mindset than on skill, and your mindset must be to win, whatever it takes, not merely to survive.”
Establishing what Claggett calls “a clear mental trigger” means anticipating the evolution of trouble and having limits in mind in advance.
“Given the specific circumstances you’re in, know what action you will take when the suspect’s behavior reaches your trigger point. How close will you let a guy with a knife get before you shoot? How many times will you tell a gunman to drop his weapon?
“If you don’t know, you’ll more likely make no decision or a bad decision. Mentally drawing a line in the sand lets you avoid hesitation and prevents you from falling back on an unplanned startle response – two confirmed killers of officers. In a sense, you’re giving yourself the answers to the test before the test!”
Equally important, Claggett believes, is honest dialogue with yourself to clearly define in advance what you are willing to do in a crisis. Will your personal standards of operation permit you to act confidently and decisively under stress?
“Would you shoot a dangerous suspect in the back when legally justified in doing so?” Claggett asks. “Would you run over someone with your squad car who was threatening to shoot you? Would you feel compelled to try some intermediate-force option before employing deadly force, even in the face of an imminent threat? The time to ponder your moral and ethical code and resolve potential dilemmas is not when lives are on the line.”
“Static positioning during range training leaves a terrible training scar,” Claggett says. “When you’re targeted by a deadly threat, movement is life. Ingrain that concept into your thinking and into your conditioned reaction. Get off the ‘X’. More laterally, not linearly, in relation to your adversary to make yourself a harder target. And if possible, of course, move to cover.”
Quoting an anonymous sage, Claggett says in a crisis, “‘We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training’.”
To drive that level higher, “training needs to be uncomfortable, always pushing you to meet tougher challenges, acquire more demanding skills, make harder decisions, and build confidence and competence where any trace of uncertainty and mediocrity exists. We often get too little of that because we tend to train in our comfort zone. Think of training like an insurance policy: You hate paying the premiums, but when you need it you want the best coverage there is.”
Critique yourself after every stop and every call, Claggett urges.
“What were your strengths and weaknesses? What did you do that could have gotten you hurt or killed? What could you have done better? What do you need to improve on? Don’t let a good end result justify the means by which you got there. Be proactive about remedying shortcomings. Don’t just leave it to Fate, because Fate has a real good way of pointing out our deficiencies when it’s too late.
“Cops don’t like to hear – even from themselves – that they could do things better,” Claggett says.
“Ego can get in the way of self-improvement. True warriors put ego aside and make the principles of tactical thinking a lifestyle. They understand that hope is not a strategy and luck is not a skill. They not only recognize that they can be better, they take action to make it happen.”

AUGUST 1, 2019
NEWTOWN, Conn. — National Shooting Sports Month® in August provides the perfect opportunity for experienced target shooters and newcomers alike to head to a shooting range in your area and experience what millions of Americans have long appreciated — that a day at the range is a day of fun!
This 31-day celebration of the shooting sports, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation® (NSSF®) in 2017, reminds people that everyone can enjoy these safe, fun and social activities with target systems. It’s also the perfect time for an experienced shooter to mentor a newcomer in a sport that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment at every skill level.
National Shooting Sports Month has been growing steadily since its inception three years ago. This year’s celebration includes more than 2,000 events at ranges and retailers across the country — a new record! — and all-new Gearbox Giveaway drawings for some stellar prize packs. Experienced shooters will also discover how they can give the shooting sports a boost when they mentor someone new as part of NSSF’s nationwide +ONESM Movement.
“When you take someone to the shooting range, whether a newcomer or an experienced shooter, youth or adult, you’re going to have a good time,” said Zach Snow, NSSF Director, Retail & Range Business Development. “Whether it’s breaking clay targets, knocking down steel plates or shooting long distance, the shooting sports are exciting, safe and social. A day at the range is a day making memories.”
The information hub for National Shooting Sports Month and its numerous Gearbox Giveaways is LetsGoShooting.org. There you can learn information about dozens of target-shooting sports involving rifle, shotgun and handgun either in a recreational or competitive format. You’ll also find the shooting ranges and firearms retailers near you, learn about National Shooting Sports Month events in your state, enter the Gearbox Giveaways, print targets, watch instructional videos and learn how to safely handle and store firearms.
For those taking the +ONE Pledge and mentoring someone new, our Range Safety and Etiquette video is a great way to kick off that first visit to a range for both. “Extend that invitation,” encouraged Snow. “You’ll be glad you did.”
Don’t have a mentor? No problem. Shooting ranges work with newcomers all the time and can help you get started with safe, supervised instruction.
Snow encourages the use of the hashtag #LetsGoShooting on social media, saying, “Sharing your experience reminds others of what they’re missing and encourages them to spend a day at the range,” said Snow. “It’s going to be a great month, and we want to know how everyone is celebrating.”

]]>This incident was close to our home – just a few miles from Triumph Systems Headquarters. Regardless of proximity to our place of work, certainly worthy of discussion as there are many learning points.
The net result is that 1) the shoplifter will survive, 2) this incident will cost the city of Ladue a lot of money (tax dollars a good work), and 3) the officer is being charged with felony second-degree assault (and faces 1 – 7 years in prison if convicted).
While we don’t have much sympathy for the shoplifter, she was not harming anyone and did not deserve to be shot. That said, don’t be dumb - both shoplifting and not being complicit with Police are things not to do.
We are typically not one to the armchair quarterback or second-guess the operator on the field…. But, from what we read and heard, this incident screams negligence by both the officer and the city. That said, all the facts have not been disclosed so we will have to wait and see how this plays out in court. Our prediction is that both (the officer and the city) will pay a significant price.
Officers need to be intuitive and train their reflexes under stress with proper turning target systems and situation-based training. Training to improve reflex time and accuracy, using reactive shooting targets or moving targets, is vital to being able to responsibly deploy the needed tool.
Some of the lessons that can be drawn from this incident are,
o Repetition: drawing and engaging (both lethal and less-than-lethal) should be as instinctual as walking and talking on the phone. In my words, “don’t train until you get it right. Train until you can’t get it wrong.”
o Train to a standard: Municipalities should train to defined standards using target systems and require periodic testing. In our words, “Training is meaningless if designed to simply ‘check the box
o Gear placement: One way to mitigate negligence displayed here is to set up a gear where the deployment of less-than-lethal requires a cross draw – this is a common SOP for many municipalities (I’m not sure if this is the case in Ladue or not).
Remember that as Americans it is our right to carry and if you choose to (whether because it’s your Second Amendment Right or because you’re a Law Enforcement Officer), it’s your responsibility to do so safely.
For more training ideas see this 90 second video. Train like a professional with the showcased Turning target system, developed by a Navy SEAL, and make your range time count.

]]>This was the case for our CEO, over the weekend and on Sunday, despite his best efforts to avoid, after sliding on “black ice", countering to correct, and oscillating a couple of times, he found himself stuck in a snow-filled ditch on the side of a scary section of highway.
Thankfully nothing serious happened and he is still whole to tell you this story. This blog is dedicated to sharing our experience with you; sharing ways to prevent / counter spins outs; and what you need to know if what happened to him, happens to you.
Avoid spin outs altogether:
-Stay off the road. This is the best way to avoid spinning out. If you find yourself bored, try buying some throwing knives, they go great with our Threat Down Targets and can be used in the comfort of your home or in your basement.
-Keep speeds slow and avoid sudden changes in speed – especially when changing lanes, rounding turns, and on the on/off ramps.
-Have the most current information before deciding to leave your house – most states keep their DOT websites up to date!
If you find yourself in a spin out:
-Stay calms and DON’T break!
-Turn into the spin (and your turn should be proportionate to the severity of the spin).
-Expect your car to oscillate several times – remember over-correction in steering only makes it worse!!!
Oops, I’m in a ditch:
-Communicate to local Law Enforcement Agencies and your insurance company of status – assuming no injuries – and get a support vehicle on site.
-Mark your position to warn oncoming traffic – I like flares because they work both day and night (plus who doesn’t like pyro)!
-Unlike me, have a snow shovel, chains, and a tow rope – maybe you can get yourself out with a little elbow grease – but don’t put yourself in danger spot by working you digging out.
After my mishap, I went google to see what information was out there on this topic and found this video useful:
Stay safe this winter and always air on the side of caution when traveling!!!
As always, train hard and stay frosty!
It doesn’t hurt to state the obvious. Please, please don’t leave your house unless it is absolutely necessary. Any less than necessary can wait, for your life is more important than whatever it is. If you feel the need to engage in productive and fun activities, prepare before the winter hits. You might some of the products listed below from Triumph Systems to make your winter fun while honing your firearm shooting skills.
]]>Summary:
A man from Montanna has reportedly taken a shot at what he thought was the BIGFOOT. He’s quoted saying, “I don’t target practice — but if I see something that looks like Bigfoot, I just shoot at it.”
Thankfully the man was not a good shooter. If not, the situation wouldn’t have been something we pass as a joke. As American citizens, it is our fundamental right to carry firearms to stay safe. With that being said, it is also important that we understand the responsibility that comes with having one.
It is important that we become conscious users of firearms. Take firearm training often and keep yourself sharp. Train with Moving target systems, Turning target systems, Reactive shooting targets, etc. to improve your target ID skills.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
Train hard and stay frosty (and if someone is shooting at you because they think you look like bigfoot - - - take cover!)

]]>Now I say ‘basic’ but really this is a sequence action that when performed efficiently looks basic, but how easy will this be if it’s something you have to think about? In moments like this, where the scorecard is not pointed at a target, this must be drilled into your DNA so that you respond.
This is why even the most elite military and police teams practice these seamlessly mindless tasks over and over again. We call it ‘back to basics. The next time you’re at the range practicing with moving target systems or turning target systems, consider this. Also, remember that repetition leads to muscle memory; muscle memory leads to instinct, and instinct is the ability to make the right decision before you can articulate how you arrived at that decision.

]]>It’s no surprise that Law Enforcement agencies from coast-to-coast are not only challenged to fill recruitment classes, but additionally, with what has become termed “the war on cops”, officers and deputies are leaving the force at an alarming rate. This results in undermanned agencies, overworked police force, and safety issues to the communities they serve.
This in tandem with technological advancements - smart phones and Facebook live - allows unprecedented access to view law enforcement activities unfold realtime and is creating an accelerant to fuel the unwarranted fire against our law enforcement community.
The politicians that we elect too often cave into public outcry – not because it’s right or ethical – and too infrequently stand up for those charged to protect the communities that elected them into public office. This type of behavior within the political ranks manifests itself in many ways; one of which is highlighted in the article below. To sum it up, the de-escalation-type policies forced upon many agencies are not the sole solution. Is there a place for de-escalation? Of course, and de-escalation is always preferred, but it should not create unnecessary risks to officers and the innocent as what happened here.
As it pertains to this article (read it here) and so many incidents, ask yourself this:

Since I was born, operators and tacticians of all types (including Call of Duty “warriors" :P) have engaged in a meaningful discussion regarding the optimal way to carry a firearm when not holstered or slung: High Ready or Low Ready?
As a practitioner of both, it’s my opinion that the situation dictates and as such, it’s important to be well versed with both. For example, when being carried by boat to an objective, the high ready makes a lot of sense the same way it makes sense to be in the low ready when on a helicopter. And believe me, I’ve had my fair share of Army friends tell me, ‘You Navy SEALs like the high ready so that in the event of a negligent discharge, you don’t sink the boat.’ This of course is followed by laughter and chuckles and I simply chalk it up to humor and brotherly rivalry.
That said, this humorous statement validates my point that literally, the situation dictates and the end-user should be well versed with both so that he or she can best adapt to the environment in which they are operating.
It is important that you practice and train for different situations such as this using Electronic target systems, Firearm training targets, Turning target systems, etc. so that your brain automatically switches between high-ready and low-ready based on the situation.

]]>As a veteran of the SOF community and in that capacity, having worked with canines (almost exclusively dual purpose) overseas, it was really interesting to see these canines in action and discuss specifics regarding best practices for application of our canine teammates. While some variance exists with regard to the canines role or ‘job’ and application thereof from one agency to the next, the fabric and foundation of what makes a canine and it’s handler effective transcends departments and agencies whether Law Enforcement or military.
Some of those truths I see that are universal to all effective canines and handlers include:
